Detroit Zoo

Today:

Three lemurs chillin'.  Ringtail.

Two White (Wide) Rhinos in the shade.

Male and female lion; sleeping.

One chimp.

Four kinds of penguin.

An arctic fox; curled up, showing his little face.

A couple of seals.

A camel.

Two ostriches, not together- the rescued big one is named Hannibal.

Two wolves- a female white one and male black one.  One's a rescue.

Lots of butterflies.

Kangaroos sitting in the shade.

Lot of yellow orange tree frogs.

A grizzly bear perched up on a rock ledge.

An American black bear.

Several giraffe.

Three horses- two in the petting zoo by a cow, and one by the camel.

A sloth side pocking out of a log.

A red panda high up far away in a tree,

The zoo started when a circus went bankrupt and the animal were used for another purpose a hundred and fifty years ago or something like that.

IMDB

One of the websites I have been going to for years is the Internet Movie Database.  It's because the information seems to be factual and I can see everything an actor has done on film when I want to know "What's the name of that movie?"  Or "Who is that guy?"  Or, "What else has she been in?" Or "How old is that lady?"

The site has a feature where you can see actors paired together and that's cool if you want to know how many Katharine Hepburn and Cary Grant films there are; or how many Ingrid Bergman films with Cary Grant there are.  There are also character pages so you can see a list of everyone who's played Cleopatra, for instance.  Or Spiderman.  Isn't there a new Spiderman trilogy that starts every five years?  What happened to the old ones?

You can also see estimated profits and how many awards a person or a movie received.

Sometimes I am shocked to see an actor with a few roles upcoming that have been announced.  Some have one or two listed; and most have none.  But every once in awhile there is someone with so much work.

Favulous First Paragraph - Wally Lamb's I Know This Much Is True

This one got me not because of what's on the page but for the image the words made me think- even though he didn't say that.

ReganBooks first published 1998

On the afternoon of October 12, 1990, my twin brother Thomas entered the Three Rivers, Connecticut Public Library; retreated to one of the rear study carrels, and prayed to God the sacrifice he was about to commit would be deemed acceptable.  Mrs. Theresa Fenneck, the children's librarian, was officially in charge that day because the  head librarian was at an all-day meeting in Hartford.  She approached my brother and told him he'd have to keep his voice down or else leave the library.  She could hear him all the way up at the front desk.  There were other patrons to consider.  If he wanted to pray, she told him, he should go to church, not the library.

I guess when re-reading it that there isn't much here to make me think Thomas is a kid.  But when I read this I was thinking of a grubby little kid wanting to go into a rear study carrel to pray and it didn't occur to me that he might be praying aloud or anything over a mumble.  So when I got to the end of the paragraph it seemed the author had cleverly led me to believe in a young Thomas who would be distracting perhaps in his youthful eagerness to pray but naw- that's not it, he's talking full voice in a quiet place.

I guess maybe you had to be there.

After the very next paragraph the first one gets put into a new perspective and we're off... good way to start to get my attention; wanting to know what happens next.

Typing note:  No glasses on and print a little blurry on the screen but no difficulty; and a little more blurry in the book, with slight difficulty on some few words.  My semi-colon key is no longer inoperable but the "r" has come off and instead of typing the key I'm typing the little tiny button underneath the key since the R is laid aside and not there where it should be.  It seems to me in the past with this key board and a few others, keys have come off as in cubes; and I could snap them back on.  This time it's just the flat top of the key with the "R" on it that has escaped.

Library note:  The idea that church and library being separate or even at odds is a strong one; yet many people there are believers.  There is some kind of understanding that a library is secular and there was a nice story about that between a red-faced customer and one employee who both attend the same church- no details at this time in a public forum...

Quotes from Sleeping With the Enemy: Coco Chanel's Secret War

Hal Vaughan Vintage Books 2012

Despite her age she sparkles; she is the only volcano in the Auvergne that is not extinct... the most brilliant, the most imperious, the most brilliantly insufferable woman that ever was.
Prologue

p.64-65
...Dinklage played at the casino and dined with Aldous and Maria Huxley.  "There were Huxley picnics at sundown on beach or olive grove or cliff... we ate fried rabbit, zucchini flowers, and drank jugs of iced punch- white wine, lemon, rum- made by Aldous himself."

p. 69
One Summer day in 1930 in Monte Carlo, Grand Duke Dmitri introduced Chanel to Samuel Goldwyn, who wanted her to design clothes for his stars- Joan Blondell, Madge Evans, and Gloria Swanson.  At the height of the American economic depression, with 13 million citizens out of work, Goldwyn offered Chanel a million dollars (about $14 million in today's money) if she would spend a few weeks in Hollywood.

Back in Orlando

Driving back it's almost like I haven't lived here for years.  It was refreshing to see the corner of Oak Ridge and OBT the way I saw it driving through looking for an apartment in - 1996? - I think.  It wasn't the hood to me then but a nice green place with blue sky and cheap rent.  I was happy to be leaving school even though I had loved that too.

Today I noticed the Save-A-Lot that I liked was gone.  The crappy one is still here.  Last night I noticed that Cypriana is gone.  It was a great homey place with a mad genius chef in the kitchen.  He'd stir up classic Greek stuff and add things that were delicious.  There was a Floridiana sauce from orange juice and liqueur for instance; and cinnamon green beans.  Too bad the hummus wasn't that great but where did they go?  It makes me so sad to think how many families have lost everything they own trying to run a restaurant.  Remember Testarillo's?  Peeza they served; and little fluffy bits of cake- a lunch special that includes drink and dessert - isn't this what we want?

Disney looks different.  They're adding overpasses and the two parking garages don't look out of place to me anymore.  Bits of land between things that used to have trees on them are being cleared.  I really liked all the borders of trees that blocked one's view between constructed areas so you couldn't tell how close together everything is.  At Animal Kingdom the vista now includes a huge square building when you used to just see trees.  Disney Springs now has a Spanish or Mediterranean or South Florida style.  The place where you buy tickets looks like a Cracker Barrel.  There was an hour wait.  But the deal is fine.

The McDonald's on OBT is knocked down and being rebuilt.  There is nothing there but the sign; which I think states that it's not open- as if there were any question.

There are big piles of dirt by Casting at Disney and some other places there, at the corner of Oak Ridge and is it San Antonio?  Across from the Chinese place... The apt complex seems to have quieted down, and there still is no one in the Tom & Chee ever- I'm glad it's still in business, but why is it?  There is a Chik-Fil-A where the Friday's used to be on Sand Lake and OBT- the same plaza where World Market left us.  That was such a fun store to look around in- notice I said look around in, not buy stuff- maybe that's the problem..  Firehouse Subs on Kirkman and Conroy has moved over to a little store at the other end of the plaza for a coming Smashburger.  That's a surprise.  Either move to another location or close, right?  But same plaza.  The Bojangle's McDonald's area on 436 is still weird.  Nobody's in the Bojangle's and somebody's digging a big hole where the Bennigan's used to be.

The Changing Your Your World banner was gone; but I didn't investigate.

It's been a year since I've lived here without wondering if that's true.

Live Music

So I caught a little snippet of a young guy playing violin and singing on a boy band competition and the next night saw two musical groups live.  We also passed another one on the way to the restaurant but didn't stop to listen.  Thee were two couples; a man and a woman, and one trio.  And two of the groups had people sitting on a box playing it like it is a percussion instrument.  When someone asks "what instrument do you play?" what do they say?  "I play a little bureau."?  I've seen that in church too but I didn't know it was a current thing.  I actually thought he found a wooden box.  Have been living under or in one of those or what?

We went to Winter Garden and went to a couple places like Pilar's and Mooncricket and it's a fun place to walk around.  It reminds me of downtown Lake Worth and Mayberry.

I also thought of another few bands I've seen live that I think I didn't list in that previous post.  Maybe I'll test my memory some day and see if I forgot some.

Google's Blogger, Google and YouTube

I continue to be captivated by conspiracy theories on YouTube.  And YouTube has its own conspiracy.  The biggest YouTuber; Pewdiepie, was attacked by the Wall Street Journal, who pretended as if they didn't know he is a comedian.  It was ridiculously biased and had to be intentional.  There is no way anyone who speaks English would think he is being serious when he is joking- even if they only watched one video.  His humor is obvious, and I find it very funny and endearing.  Clearly anyone writing an article about Pewdiepie would hopefully watch many of his videos and there is absolutely no way these two authors thought he was being serious about discriminating against anyone.  Even if someone doesn't find Pewdiepie funny- it is so clear when he is making a joke.  I am disgusted at the authors and editor and anyone else who approved that story because 10 minutes of research would have discredited the article and after it was published, companies and other news outlets went with it instead of doing their own ten minutes of research before running their mouths or cancelling contracts.

Fake news is real.  And it's a real problem.

YouTube is most likely going through the conspiracy theorists that use YouTube and harassing them and deleting their channels.  Whether YouTube is complicit or directly responsible or sloppily managed; it is not clear- but it's going to result in all of them heading to Vidme or some other uncensored platform.

Speaking conspiratorily, I don't think there are any uncensored websites that aren't allowed to be uncensored.  I think its' a decision made somewhere other than just by the author- but in any case, refusing ads from big sponsors as if anyone who has ever watched YouTube doesn't understand the ad process- shame on you YouTube.  I don't think more than ten percent of users have any problem at all with which ads are linked with which videos.  This is really a non-issue that you're pushing to clean up your platform from content creators you don't like.

This is wrong morally and it's not a good business decision.  You could have easily placated your bog-company sponsors instead of stirring them up.  You made a moral judgment here and I don't agree with it.  Of course, I'm using your Blogger to say that (to no one) and I understand that each service can decide how they run it.  "You" are going to tell me that businesses have to serve customers in every protected class of people but what about people that don't agree with them.  Can we have some protection for Truthers?  Don't we all have the right to be incorrect or to ask someone else why they are lying?

The search engine the Google website uses is the best I've found.  But the search engine on YouTube is pretty bad.  You guys are the same company, right?  Can you work on this?

Here's a screen shot from YouTube.  Are you not investing in it or have you figured out that it makes so much money why bother fixing it, or are you deliberately sabotaging it?

The littlest frog

Yesterday my uncle was talking about tree frogs the size of medium dogs.

Today I saw one the size of a thumbnail on a car hood on my way into the apt when it was raining.

This isn't him but it's a picture I found.

Google's 4th Doodle

Does anybody else think this looks weird?  At first glance it looks like Dems and Repubs but then it seems like all the forest creatures gathering to peer at Snow White or Jesus or something.

It is also interesting that the GOO is so separated from the GLE.  I've looked at many Google Doodles and it seems like they always have the six letters or shapes representing them- evenly spread across the area from left to right- but many times with different altitudes like today's.

Animals don't care about national holidays.

What gives?
